A Valentine’s Day Jewelry Guide for New Relationships

New relationships present a bit of problem when it comes to Valentine’s Day. If you met someone recently, you might feel fond enough to buy an expensive piece of jewelry for them, but is that really appropriate for someone you’ve only known a short while? On the other hand, giving inexpensive jewelry says something about you that you might not want to be said – namely that you’re cheap or that you don’t know how to give a good gift. A lot of people avoid the issue completely be simply avoiding jewelry…but that need not be the solution.

The trick for buying jewelry in a new relationship is to keep it simple.  Don’t spend an extraordinary amount on something that would make your partner feel awkward, but do give him or her something of quality.  Whether a sterling silver bracelet or money clip for him or a locket, bangle or earrings for her, there are plenty of choices that speak volumes of your taste and won’t give the wrong  impression.

Below are some suggestions that can help:

1) Avoid Diamonds – Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but quality diamonds are not cheap and should ideally be reserved for relationships that are more than a few weeks to a few months old.  It’s better to get your partner an exquisite gemstone in another variety than to spring for a cheap diamond that only looks good under jewelry store lights.

2) Avoid Rings – Rings present two problems.  They indicate a level of seriousness that you might be feeling but very well don’t want to let your partner know about just yet.  The other problem is that the aesthetic difference between a cheap ring and nice ring is obvious.  A low priced ring will not be perceived as a nice gift, so unless you’ve been together long enough to merit a quality purchase, stay away from rings.

3) Watch Those Watches -  Watches fall into two major categories, which are fashion watches and luxury watches.  Within “luxury watches”, many manufacturers make lower cost versions of their more expensive top of the line counterparts.  In my opinion, a nice fashion watch is not only a wearable, useful gift, but makes a far better gift that a bottom of the barrel offering with a well known brand name on it.  No one wants the cheapest of the line in anything, especially timepieces.  Fashion watches serve a purpose and look great doing so.

4) Think Wrist Wear -  Bracelets and anklets are fantastic choices for new relationships.  You can get a very nice, very respectable 18K gold bracelet for a man or woman for not a lot of money.  Ladies, just be careful when buying for men.  Some won’t wear gold. Steel (also nice and equally inexpensive) looks a lot more masculine.

5) The Right Earrings for Her Shape of Face - There are literally unlimited options when it comes to high quality, low priced earrings that look great and will send the right message.   The problem is that so few men are aware of the fact that not all earring styles look great with all faces.  Do yourself a favor and notice what she wears now in terms of size and style.  If she like studs, find something small.  If she likes hoops or dangling earrings, find something similar.  Chances are she chose what she wears regularly for a reason.
